Chapter 4

Knowledge is an aspect of business that managers need to keep the business running successfully. Walgreens relies on human and social capital to maintain its success. Human capital is where employees can increase their skills and education while working for the company. For them to get new pharmacists they advertise offering scholarships to interns, while they are training the interns while working for them. This gives the interns the choice to come back to Walgreens after the graduate and they will already be familiar with the system. For the technicians, they offer a training program to become certified and they offer to pay the costs of the examination. Walgreens shows that the knowledge of who works for them is important, and they support them expanding their knowledge as much as possible to be successful while they are working for the company. Social capital is where employees create relationships between others that work or don’t work for the company. For social capital, Walgreens make sure that they talk amongst themselves at the different stores. This can be for a patient and seeing if they have a drug in stock that they can fill for them or if an employee is looking to transfer to another store to see if they have the availability for them. Walgreens creates opportunities for their employees to grow their knowledge to better the company and for the employee to have the knowledge needed to be successful in their career whether it’s with them or not.
